LEADERSHIP CORE:
The Leadership Core of Sojourners Community Church is what has been traditionally called "The Elders" in other churches. They have overall responsibility for the church together with the staff.
The process of adding members to the Leadership Core is as follows:
People who meet the biblical qualifications for "eldership" are recommended to the current Leadership Core by the Leadership Community (usually Life! Group Leaders and Servant Team Leaders) with the approval of the person concerned. After this they are discussed by the current Leadership Core, interviewed and, if all goes well, affirmed at the annual Focus Forum meeting in February. Each member of the Leadership Core usually serves a term of 3 years. (Further details on the selection, criteria, expectations and responsibilities of Leadership Core members can be downloaded here)
Although staff are allowed to be members of the Leadership Core, the church bylaws state that there must be a majority of non-staff (i.e. "Lay") members. The only constant member of the Leadership Core is the Lead Pastor.
